Striking a Balance in Health With Homeopathy

In today’s fast paced 24/7 world, with its constant barrage on our senses finding time to nurture ourselves or relax is becoming more difficult. Rising stress levels leads one to succumb to various health troubles and with time constraints an unbalanced work life can affect one’s physical and mental vitality which could potentially increase the risk of diseases (Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein 1983). Busy people may postpone seeking medical advice until a problem has become more critical, or may focus on control of troubling symptoms rather than devoting the time to investigate the underlying reasons for declines in their health.

A homoeopathic consultation involves obtaining a thorough case history of all ailments and possible disease triggers, which are recorded and used during, follow up visits, saving time over a course of treatment. Clients are attracted to natural therapies like homeopathy when seeking ways to improve their quality of life and healing the aliments by addressing underlying causes as well as a focus on the bothersome symptoms.

Stress is insidious in our daily life creating havoc in our mind and body. For some, stress means combating everyday traffic to get to work, for others it may be getting the kids ready in time for school. Things become more complicated when we accept stress as a way of life! What we nurture within us may take days, weeks or even years to realise that this seemingly temporary condition is responsible for our major health issues.

All of us at sometime will experience difficult situations in life that result in various negative emotions like anxiety, fear and grief which may impact on our overall health. People feel overwhelmed by these inner feelings and find it hard to share their concerns even with close family or friends. During a homeopathic consultation these negative emotions become important to understand as a part of overall health, and clients often report they have a clearer understanding of the role stress plays in their disease following a consultation.

Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine that helps in restoring health by providing medicines based on the individual’s physical and mental characteristics. This royal medicine, as they call it syncs extremely well within the complementary and alternative group of therapies. It can also be used along with other treatment specialities like physiotherapy, osteopathy and nutrition. In homeopathy, the medicines are prepared from natural substances to trigger self healing responses in the body in a safe and gentle manner. These medications are made up of miniscule doses of plants, minerals, animal products or other compounds that brings about a balance by restoring health and wellbeing (Barnes et al. 2004).

Many people attest to the fact that massage therapy is useful in healing sore pains or muscular spasms. Most of these benefits come from the therapist’s understanding of shiatsu and the body’s “total” energy. Similarly, homeopathy works by helping balance the body’s energy or “chi” as known in traditional Chinese medicine. The World Health Organisation acknowledges that homeopathy is the second largest system of medicine in the world (WHO 2014).

The founder of homeopathy, German doctor Samuel Hahnemann wanted to design a medical system that focused on more than only controlling the symptoms of a disease. At the heart of his philosophy lay a simple interpretation; disease strikes when the body’s internal ‘life force’ or vital energy is disturbed. He wanted to impart this holistic science on mankind which is evident from his below quote: (Bradford 2004)

Disease is a process starting with the weakening of the immune system caused by mental factors and eventually leads to the physical pathology which is just a result of disease not the cause.” (Life and Letters of Samuel Hahnemann)
